Journal 10

In this course I learned the genres in the story. After having a PowerPoint and an assignment on genres it gave me a better chance to know what genres where. Some of the genres that are in books are horror, romantic, fiction, non-fiction, mystery and much more. The genre talks about the type of writing it is in the story or even a film. My favourite genres are romantic and mystery. A story can have more than one genre mentioned in the story but usually there is only one genre in the story.

As a child one of my favourite books I used to read all the time was the Berenstain bears series. I loved reading those books because they were a TV show that used to come on called the Berenstain bears. The books were related to the TV show and when I would read the books than I would watch the TV shows. Still as a grown up today I watch the berestain bears with my siblings on the TV and have read most of the books. When I was little I had a collection of the books and would always take them out from the library because I loved watching and reading the books. What I loved about those series was that it would always teach children a lesson of doing something right and what is wrong for them. For example, one of the book is called Too Much TV in that book it talks about how too much TV is not good for you and what else you can do instead of watching TV.

As a child they way I used to read books were with my siblings. We had lots of books at home when were children so with my siblings I used to play library. One of sister would be the librarian me and my other sister would go and pick out books from the library; we were allowed to take out 3 books each day. After we were done picking out the books we would sit down in my room and then read the books for at least half an hour. This would be the way I used to read books as a child with my siblings and alone in a fun way. I still remember those days because now I hardly read books because I don’t have time; maybe once in awhile I would read a book that is really interesting. Some of the books I remember reading is Green eggs and ham, Arthur, Franklin and Clifford. In our library we used to have all sorts of books even in different language. It was really fun reading books in a great way and getting experience to read books in a different way as well.

In this course when we had read the story called “A new life” by Rukhsana Khan it was really interesting to me because I had the same experience when I immigrated to Canada. In this book two siblings Khadija and Hamza come to Canada from Pakistan leaving their home country. This story is about how the 2 children and their family are facing struggles of setting into a new country and beginning a new life. The family also experience many difficulties such as fitting in a new environment learning a new language, making new friends. I believe that this story is an example to most people when they came to a new country and how they must have felt. I relate this story to my own life because when I came new to Canada I didn’t understand English and was having a hard time fitting into the environment because back home it was different. When we come new to any country it is really tough for everyone to settle down in the environment it takes time to get used to the environment and people there.

Journal 6

Some of the children books we have read and discussed in this course which I found interesting were called Where the wild things are, Red is Best, How smudge came, Good night moon, The paper bag princess. When we were reading these books in class I had learned what the elements in the story were and the important symbols in the stories. I noticed that the children books had pictures in them and simple text but as the books got for older children the text became more and pictures were less. When we had talked about the children’s books in this course I had learned a lot from them such as where the wild things are I learned that the boy imagines going the other world where the wild things are and become the ruler for the animals, which is all his imagination. I learned that the book would be appropriate for the children and they can see the different animals in the story. In this course I loved reading children’s books because in my field that I am going to is working with children and books are important so in this course I have been experienced to many children’s books which are a great thing.

Journal 5

After reading the shepherd’s granddaughter we had a group discussion about the book. We were assigned an in class assignment in groups to make a map locating places mention in the story to our own imagination. As a group we had a discussion of where we would mark each location; such as Amani’s house, Seedo and Sitti’s house and Hani and Fatima’s house. We had to mark the most important places in the story that had been on the assignment sheet. As a group we couldn’t decided where to mark the places on the map we had drew. We went through difficulties when making the map we kept on erasing the places that we would mark on the map. We had made 3 maps because we kept on removing and then adding locations to it. Finally we had marked all the locations on the map and gave it our best work than we decided to hand it. It was really complicated drawing a map and putting all the locations in the map with our imagination.

In this course when we watched the Movie Bridge to the Terabithia it was a really great experience. I really loved how the story in the movie went and the importance in the story. When I had watched the movie the third time in class and discussed the movie together than I had realized the important in the story what some of the things in the story meant. Before when i had watched the movie i had never realized those things but when I had watched the third time I had understand what some of the objects mean in the story. This movie had many symbolisms that I had noticed one of it was when Jesse had built the bridge to the Terabithia. He had built the bridge so his sister has safe way to go on the other side. He wanted to protect his sister from falling down the way Leslie had fallen when she was crossing the rope to go to the other world but die. The bridge meant going to a new world and begging a new life after Leslie had died for Jesse.  What I had found interesting in the story was when Jesse and Leslie had both built the imaginary world together, and how Leslie had bough light into Jesse life. I had really loved watching this movie and would love to watch it over and over again.

My experience reading a book to the toddlers for the first time was challenging and a little fun. The book I had choose to read to the toddlers was called "NO, David”, why I had choose this book was the children loved this book and wanted me to read this book to them. The book was great for the children because it had simple and less text for the children to read. The illustration in the book was in detailed were the children could understand what was happening in the picture and what David was doing. When I was reading the book I would stop on stop on every page and have conservation with the children about that page and expand in detailed to the children what David would be doing. Reading this book to the toddlers for the first time was challenging as I had said before because you have to make sure the children are interested in the book, you the reader is reading the book with enthusiasm and expression, and it is age appropriate for the children. It was a great start reading the book and throughout this course I was introduced to many of the children books which can be useful in my life.
